These wrong accusations from the media and journalists painted the wrong picture about the daily struggles Americans have to face. The inability to read statistical data made many Economists believe that Americans are lazy. As they love to say "Nowadays people prefer easy schedules instead of working hard and making money". Since when working hard correlates to money and success, and what statistical data shows that people prefer to implement easy schedules. Let's dive into statistics and see what is right and what is wrong. Are Americans Lazy? According to statistics, only 4,5% of the people in America are unemployed. This proves that Americans are not lazy, and some even work more than 1 job. Around 8.5 million people work more than 60 hours a week and they barely match up with this fast-paced society. Since health care and insurance are so expensive, people are forced to get out of their comfort zone and forget about laziness. Now, what people want to focus on is daily exercise and working out. According to a CDC survey, around 15% of Americans don't exercise regularly. One of the main reasons this is happening is correlated to their jobs and working hours. As we already mentioned 8,5% of the people work two jobs, leaving them with no free time for exercise and working out. This leaves us with 6,5% of physically lazy people, which is not a bad number. When compared to other developed countries, America outperforms most of them in every single term correlated to unemployment rates. In Spain (13,6%), Italy (9.7%), Sweeden (6.7%), Denmark (4.9%), France (8.1%), Belgium(5,2%), people aren't working as much as Americans (4,3%). Young Adults and Their Working Tendencies Older generations view millennials as spoiled and lazy. Why do people tend to devalue newer generations and why do they see them as incompetent? The vast majority of adults (84%) predicted that kids would be getting worse over time. Unfortunately, they were wrong. According to the U.S Bureau of labor statistics, the unemployment rate for youth was 9.1% in July 2019, the lowest rate since July 1966. These generations are far away from being lazy. When it comes to having a job, millennials outperformed every other generation behind them. It's incredible how millennials are overcoming some serious problems they are up against. According to statistics, a college degree is worth as much as a high school diploma. Millennials stand out for their levels of education and this works against them because the supply of educated workers is higher than the demand for them. Also, another huge problem they are facing is their college debt. Statistics show that today there are more than 1.3 trillion dollars student loans which is two and a half times more than a decade ago. Unhealthy Diets Made Americans Look Lazy Around 81 million Americans eat fast food daily. This obsession with fast food made them live an unhealthy life. Americans love fast food simply because it saves them lots of time and money. Mac meal from Mcdonald's costs $5 and is prepared for less than 10 minutes. Instead of shopping for groceries and cooking for 2 hours, grabbing a big mac seemed easier. That is why more than 70 million adults are obese and 99 million are overweight. These weight problems are making it difficult for them to exercise and workout. Even though most of them have a steady job, they will still be tagged as lazy. Their working hours and habits affect their physical activity which makes it even more difficult to lose weight. What Is The Laziest State In America According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), people in Tennessee are considered to be the laziest. Their survey shows that around 30% of the people in Tennessee don't get enough exercise. Tennessee shows higher inactivity levels than most of the states in America. We are still waiting for an expert's opinion on why these numbers are much higher than the average. Experts from the CDC recommend 30 minutes of daily workout or 150 minutes per week. Final Words We shouldn't make assumptions without knowing the whole story. As Albert Einstein once said “Any fool can know. The point is to understand.”. Understanding is a privilege for those who care and want to establish deeper connections. Every day we are being blasted with information about the lazy Americans and how they hurt our economy. What's crucial to know is that spreading disinformation can lead to many unwanted outcomes. We cannot characterize a whole nation based on minors.
