Having the ability to create an environment in our brain where laziness is pushed away is pretty extraordinary. The thought process of each individual is pretty different and has a different conception of how to approach laziness as a problem.
Based on our own beliefs and needs we can create this perfect world for ourselves where we can control and create the things we like.
I have struggled with laziness for a long time and I couldn’t find a way to cope with it. Many self-proclaimed life coaches tried to help me but they didn’t have the scientific knowledge for my problems. All they did offer was some pep talk and some tips that wore off after a few days.
That couldn’t cure my chronic laziness at all. My problems were a lot deeper than I thought so I decided to dig a little further.
In order to efficiently conquer your problems, you have to start with a good self-evaluation. Recognizing the problem is one thing and dealing with it is another. The roots of our laziness are deeply connected with our habits, purposes, working tendencies, and motivation.
Distinguish Your Type Of Laziness
Acknowledging the type of laziness you have is important because that paints the image of your personality. There are two concepts we have to mention here, and those are short-term laziness and long-term laziness.
Short-term laziness is less severe when compared to long-term laziness. The reason I’m saying that is because the occurrence of short term laziness is natural and can occur to anyone at any time. The long-term laziness or chronic laziness is more severe and can cause many problems down the road if not dealt with properly.
The short-term laziness is a pretty common concept since it influences all human beings. As you already guessed, the short term laziness quickly fades away, usually after a day or two.
The reason behind its short time is simply because people have a purpose and meaning in their lives that don’t allow them to be lazy for too long. For them, laziness means losing precious time that could’ve been used to reach their destination in life.
Why it occurs and how to overcome Short-Term laziness
Short-term laziness is a signal for our body to take a break. That’s why it occurs naturally and is pretty normal.
There are many passive ways you can fight Short-term laziness and they are all correlated to the way you are living your life. Here are my easy tips on how to control short-term laziness:
1. Don’t Overthink
Overthinking is making your laziness even worse. That way you are giving it a greater significance and it overwhelms you. Instead of thinking about how many tasks you haven’t done, think about how to finish your tasks and start making a plan in your head.
Use that lazy time more effectively and start thinking about actions instead of the problems.
2. Your mind is over exaggerating
Sometimes our minds love to overreact on very simple things. That’s happening because our brain hates unfamiliar things and therefore it starts overreacting just to make you avoid that activity.
But not any kind of fear does this to us. In particular, the fear of changes has the ability to make us lazy. That is why some people cope with it easier than others. Overreacting is a defensive mechanism our brain manifests just to avoid something new that is happening to our lives.
So the best way to handle this is to baby-step your way into changes. At first, try with something insignificant, then slowly build-up your tempo until you are being comfortable.
3. A job half done is better than none
Some days no matter how hard you try you can’t completely eradicate your laziness. It simply ties our hands and you have to be able to accept it.
That way you can condition your brain to do at least half of the job desired for that particular day. Perfectionists can’t imagine themselves leaving their job uncompleted which puts even more pressure on them and makes them even lazier.
If you fall into that category, try to accept the fact that you can’t be productive every day of the year.
4. Over productivity backfiring
Our human capacities are limited. Being a workaholic has its downfalls and risks. One of those risks is lack of concentration and reduced motivation for our long term goals.
Total exhaustion from our job can lead to a negative impact on our future. What helped me overcome this problem was to take as many breaks as I could during my working hours, so that I could reset my mind and be able to perform better.
5. Slow down for a moment, have a vacation.
If you have been working non-stop for the last 6 months without taking a break, then chances of getting lazy attacks are pretty high.
By taking a break from work for at least one week, you will certainly recharge your batteries and your motivation will skyrocket.
6. You have to acknowledge that failure is inevitable.
No matter how hard you try, some things are out of your control. If a movement of a line represents our life, we can see that it constantly changes. Sometimes the lane has increasing tendencies and sometimes it drops hard.
No matter what you do, at some point in your life, you are going to reach the top and you can’t go further than that. What I want you to understand that it’s pretty normal to have ups and downs in life and what’s important is to not let those downfalls lead to procrastination and laziness.
Long-Term Laziness and Solutions
Long term laziness or chronic laziness is a severe condition that affects many people around the world. This type of laziness is an embodiment of your life goals and purposes in life.
If your life has no meaning, no purpose, and no goals, then all that is left for you to do is to be lazy. The reason why this condition is so severe is that it’s not easily controllable and is hard to overcome.
Don’t get discouraged right away, when I say hard, I mean seeing results take a little bit of time. Follow these steps that worked for me and with a little bit of effort, you can get rid of this bad habit.
1. Find your life purpose
If you want to find your life purpose you have to ask yourself two questions: What makes me happy and what excites me? The answer to those questions is the key to finding your life purpose.
Having a life purpose will enable you to be unique and spiritually fulfilled. People that have a life purpose are successful because they love the things that they do. That’s why long term laziness for them is not a problem.
2. Create good habits
Based on your preferences, creating habits that complement your life purpose is crucial for controlling and eradicating your laziness. Creating good habits might seem pretty hard if your goals are too big. But that is not a bad thing because there is an easy way on how to overcome this.
For example, if you aspire to be a great photographer and you know that that it takes 2 hours a day of practice to become one, your goal might scare you away. That’s why you should slowly build-up your habits. Start with 30 minutes a day of practice at first if that seems too much shorten it down to 15 minutes. Do this until you are comfortable with working a couple of hours a day.
3. Life is too short to waste it on laziness
Think about all the days you missed doing absolutely nothing with your life. Create a mindset where your laziness means losing time. This is the basic concept that drives successful people closer to their goals. Implement this mindset and you will start to see instant results.
4. Baby Step your way out of long term laziness
When someone is struggling with long term laziness, he has difficulty adapting to a working environment. Simply we cannot expect someone that hasn’t been working for 12 months to suddenly get out of bed and work 8-hour shifts without a break. It won’t happen.
The easiest way to overcome this is if you find a job that you are passionate about. Your work ethics will come naturally, slowly but surely. Explore many different things you find interesting and you will suddenly realize that working is not that bad. Just remember to not pressure yourself and let your preferences do the rest of the job.
5. Fight your inner Homeostasis
Biology defines Homeostasis as a state of steady internal, physical, and chemical conditions maintained by living systems. In more simple words, homeostasis keeps you from doing drastic changes in your life so that you are being protected by any kind of threat that changes may cause.
In correlation to laziness, homeostasis finds it safe for you to be lazy because you are used to this kind of behavior and is proven to be safe for your organism. That’s why laziness is so hard to eradicate. Many people try to force the idea to get out of your comfort zone and do something new.
But that is simply wrong and causes even more fear. What is effective and can certainly help you change your inner homeostasis is to find a friend that is willing to slowly push you out of your comfort zone and help you acquire new healthy habits.
6. Do at least a 5-minute walk every day
The importance of activity is crucial for fighting long term laziness and shouldn’t be belittled. Even something small like walking is enough to gain the benefits of exercising.
Those benefits include keeping you healthy and improve your mental toughness which is crucial for overcoming laziness.
Other factors that influence long-term laziness
We cannot talk about laziness without mentioning motivation and dopamine intake. Reduced levels of motivation and high intake of dopamine result in chronic laziness.
The benefits of understanding how these concepts work are enormous and can effectively target your laziness.
How motivation affects Laziness
Motivation is one of the key factors that can suppress your laziness. There are two types of motivation people are driven by, and those are extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.
Extrinsic motivation is a motivation that comes from social factors and the environment, while your own goals and preferences naturally create intrinsic motivation.
For example, if you are fat and you want to lose weight so that you can look good while you are on your vacation, you acquire lots of extrinsic motivation. But here is what happens, after you lost 15 pounds you are starting to get comfortable and as soon as the vacation is over, you lose all that motivation for exercising which makes you quickly gain weight and go back to the way you were.
While on the other hand, if you set up a goal of having a healthy life, your mind and body start creating intrinsic motivation that will never fade away. That is the big difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.
Use Intrinsic motivation more often
The reason why I give so much importance to intrinsic motivation is that many successful people are being successful because of this trait. They are guided by their intrinsic motivation and can easily overcome hard obstacles in life without even thinking about laziness.
People that are motivated by extrinsic motivation, are more likely to be lazy because they have no passion for their job. Unlike them, people that use intrinsic motivation, find meaning in everything they do. It doesn’t matter if they like it or not.
Now the real question is how to acquire intrinsic motivation so that you can eradicate long-term laziness and be more successful in life. There are 2 concepts you have to follow to become intrinsically motivated and those are development and cultivation.
The first step is to develop your intrinsic motivation. The easiest way to do that is to start with something small but has a great importance to your life.
It can be anything like paying more attention to your family or get a pet that you would take care of. The next step is to cultivate the relationship you have towards the important things in your life. That way no matter what happens, you will never lose motivation for those things. After that, slowly expand your horizons and find more meaningful things in life.
How dopamine affects your laziness
Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter that our body produces and plays a crucial role in how we feel pleasure. Some activities like playing video games, chatting on Instagram, watching videos create more dopamine than studying and working on your business. That is why dopamine finds more pleasure in playing video games than in studying.
Even though you know that studying is more important than playing video games you still can’t quit them. That is how dopamine affects your logical decisions that complement your laziness. The only way to start liking things that are crucial for your development is through Dopamine detox.
How to control your dopamine levels
Lowering your dopamine level enables you to make logical decisions about what is truly important in your life. With lowered dopamine, you will find it interesting to read books and study hard.
Doing this is easier said than done. Dopamine detox is a slow process that requires lots of determination. What’s interesting about dopamine detox is that after a week of implementing this technique you will instantly see results.
The whole purpose of dopamine detox is to make you like doing things that boring, but crucial for your development. The only way you can do this is if you limit yourself from activities that emit high levels of dopamine.
Make a list of your daily activities that create a lot of dopamine and try to limit them. For a start, limiting them by 20% is enough. The reason why this method is so hard is due to the fact that you are gonna be bored for the first few weeks. You have to be patient and let the dopamine detox take effects of your body and mind.
You will start to see results after 10 days of implementing this technique. Focusing and making rational decisions that involve lots of effort will suddenly be more attractive to you than playing video games.
If you are addicted to substances that create lots of dopamine like drugs and medication, I suggest going to therapy and consult with a doctor.
Laziness is a pretty complicated thing to overcome but is plausible. No matter how hard your journey is to overcome laziness you should never give up. Look up to the things that are dear to you and strive to be the best version of yourself. Every beginning is hard especially for those that have recurring problems of being lazy.
